Green Revolution

How India learned to grow enough, and the one part it never fixed.

Two failed monsoons in the mid 1960s left India importing wheat to feed itself. Dwarf wheat seed bred by Norman Borlaug was brought over from Mexico, and M.S. Swaminathan and his team put it into Indian fields. Wheat production went from 6 million tonnes in 1965-66 to 24 million tonnes in 1967-68, and total food grain output climbed from about 25 million tonnes in 1950 to roughly 100 million tonnes by 1980.

The same idea reached livestock a few years later. Operation Flood started in January 1970 and built a national milk grid out of village cooperatives. India went from around 17 million tonnes of milk a year at independence to more than 230 million tonnes by 2022-23, and it has been the largest milk producer in the world since it passed the United States in 1998.

Verghese Kurien, who built that milk grid, said India never had a production problem. It had an organising problem. The milk was there, but the trader set the price and kept the margin. That part was never fully fixed, and it is the reason this site exists.
