Farm machinery subsidy (SMAM)

Individual farmers can get a subsidy on approved agricultural machinery and implements. In Tamil Nadu the Agricultural Engineering Department applies a 50% subsidy for scheduled caste and scheduled tribe farmers, small and marginal farmers and women farmers; other categories receive a lower rate. Only machines on the approved list from registered manufacturers qualify.

Who is not eligible

Machines bought before approval, second-hand machines and models not on the approved list do not qualify. Farmers who already claimed a subsidy for the same machine type within the cooling-off period are not eligible again.

Documents needed

  • Aadhaar card
  • Land record (chitta/adangal)
  • Bank account passbook
  • Caste certificate if claiming the higher subsidy rate

Deadline

Applications open in windows against an annual district target. Apply early in the financial year; targets are often exhausted quickly.

How to apply

  1. Register on the farm mechanisation portal or apply at the block agricultural engineering office.
  2. Wait for the permit or approval before buying — buying first usually forfeits the subsidy.
  3. Buy from a registered dealer, submit the invoice, and the subsidy is credited to your bank account.

If rejected

  1. Ask whether the district target for that machine was already exhausted this year.
  2. Check that the model you chose is on the approved list from a registered manufacturer.
  3. Re-apply at the start of the next financial year, as early as the window opens.
