Farmers growing a notified crop in a notified area may insure it. The farmer premium is capped at 2% of sum insured for kharif food and oilseed crops, 1.5% for rabi, and 5% for commercial and horticultural crops; the rest is paid by government.

Who is not eligible

Crops or areas that the state has not notified for the season cannot be insured. Enrolment after the cut-off date for that crop and season is not accepted.

Documents needed

  • Aadhaar number
  • Bank account passbook
  • Land record or sowing certificate
  • Tenancy or lease agreement if you farm rented land

Deadline

Each crop and season has its own cut-off date set by the state. Check the notification for your district before sowing.

How to apply

  1. Check the state notification to confirm your crop and area are notified this season.
  2. Enrol on the national crop insurance portal, or through your bank, insurance agent or common service centre before the cut-off date.
  3. Keep the premium receipt and policy number; report any crop loss within 72 hours through the portal or the toll-free number.

If rejected

  1. Ask the insurance company in writing for the reason for rejection or short payment.
  2. Escalate to the district level monitoring committee through the agriculture officer.
  3. Use the PMFBY grievance route on the official portal if the district level does not resolve it.
