Syllabus by degree and course

B.Sc. Agriculture

4 years, 8 semesters

1. First year. Fundamentals of agronomy, soil science, horticulture, plant breeding, agricultural economics, and the basic sciences under all of them.
2. Second year. Crop production by crop, plant pathology, entomology, irrigation and water management, agricultural extension.
3. Third year. Farming systems, seed production, post harvest handling, farm machinery, agribusiness and marketing, plus electives.
4. Fourth year. Rural work experience in a village, hands on units in a chosen area, and a project.

Exact course codes differ between universities. The order above is what almost all of them follow, and what entrance exams for government posts assume you know.

B.Sc. Horticulture

4 years, 8 semesters

1. First year. Basic sciences, principles of horticulture, soil and plant nutrition.
2. Second year. Fruit crops, vegetable crops, plantation and spice crops, propagation and nursery work.
3. Third year. Plant protection, post harvest technology, processing, landscape and floriculture.
4. Fourth year. Field and industry experience, and a project.

The plant protection and post harvest parts are where this degree differs most from the agriculture one.

Diploma in agriculture

2 to 3 years

1. First year. Soil, crops, basic plant protection, farm tools, and how an extension service works.
2. Second year. Crop by crop practice, seed production, dairy and poultry basics, farm management, and supervised field work.

The diploma is built for field work rather than research, which is why almost all of the second year is practical.

Studying for an exam rather than a degree

Recruitment exams draw on the first 3 years of the agriculture degree, weighted towards agronomy, plant protection and extension. The study material page has notes and papers, and exams has the dates.
