Smart irrigation basics

Use water where the plant needs it, when it needs it, with as little loss as practical.

1. Start with the crop and soil

Water demand changes with crop stage, temperature, wind, soil texture and rooting depth. Sandy soil generally needs smaller, more frequent irrigation than heavier soil.

2. Choose the delivery method

Drip can reduce evaporation and place water near the root zone. Sprinklers can suit many field situations. Surface irrigation can remain practical where land shaping, soil and water supply make it efficient.
